22 Helpful Storage & Packing Tips
- Place items you may need to get to in front
- Allow for walkways
- Place your items on 2″ x 4″ boards or pallets to guard against dampness, concrete floors may become damp
- Make an inventory of stored items and keep it in a safe place
- Use uniform sized boxes for easy stacking
- Be sure your boxes are strong enough to hold 25-30lbs (it’s best not to put too much in each box)
- List contents of boxes on all four sides, number the boxes, and seal them with heavy plastic tape
- Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier ones
- Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked “Fragile, and stacked on the end
- Sofas and love-seats can be stored on the end to save space, with cushions wrapped and place on top
- Caution: Do not store leather sofas or love-seats on the end
- Caution: Hide-a-beds and recliners should not be stored on end
- Cover stuffed furniture with cardboard or protective covering, to protect against dust
- If you stand mattresses on their sides, ‘prop’ them up so they stand straight, keeping them from bending out of shape and becoming lumpy
- Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in packing paper, packed in sturdy boxes, and stacked on top
- Caution: Do not store anything combustible such as gasoline, solvents, paints, etc.
- Drain out all remaining gasoline from lawn mowers, power tools, boats, snow-mobiles, etc.
- Tables having removable legs should be ‘broken down’ to save space
- Furniture with drawers can be used to store delicate items wrapped in bubble wrap, table cloths, towels or blankets, to prevent breakage
- Large appliances make excellent ‘packing cases’ for blankets, towels, table cloths, and clothes
- Shovels, hoes, rakes, and hoses can be stored in empty trash cans, stacking extra cans inside each other
- Appliances need to be clean and dry
- Remember to leave the refrigerator door slightly opened
